The Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, in partnership with the Department of Supportive Care, at the University Health Network and Mount Sinai Hospitals (UHN/MSH), University of Toronto are accepting applications for a Fellowship in Geriatric Oncology.  The UHN/MSH has a young, dynamic inter-disciplinary geriatric oncology clinical, educational, and research program offering geriatric assessment and management to older adults with a variety of malignancies.

There is also an opportunity for a combined geriatric oncology/palliative care fellowship, with 6 months of training in each of geriatric oncology and palliative care.  Palliative care training would be coordinated by the Department of Supportive Care at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, UHN.

This Fellowship will train geriatricians or medical oncologists to provide enhanced care of the older adult with cancer.  Fellows will join a rich, multidisciplinary clinical and research environment.  Beyond clinical training in geriatric oncology, the fellowship provides educational/programmatic or research opportunities.  Educational/programmatic opportunities include designing and/or evaluating curricula for physicians and nurses in geriatric oncology as well as studying knowledge translation initiatives to enhance models of care for older cancer patients.  Research opportunities include participation in clinical trials, prospective cohort studies, and health services research in various aspects of geriatric oncology research in a variety of clinical populations, including prostate cancer, acute myeloid leukemia, head and neck cancer, myeloproliferative neoplasms, and others.  Fellows who wish to do research training are expected to develop a significant research project during the tenure of the Fellowship.

Successful candidates will be fluent in English and have completed clinical training in either Geriatric Medicine or Medical Oncology.  Geriatric Medicine specialists will receive at least one month of clinical training in ambulatory medical oncology at one of Canada’s largest and most academically intense cancer centres, whereas Medical Oncology trainees will receive 1-2 months of training in geriatric medicine (depending on learning objectives and prior training) in a combined rotation involving inpatient consultative and ambulatory clinical experiences in an internationally recognized training environment.
