Graves’ Orbitopathy: How to Refer at the University of Toronto

Graves’ orbitopathy affects approximately 40% of patients with Graves’ disease, and in moderate to severe cases, can significantly impact vision and appearance. Prompt intervention is essential in clinically active cases to reduce morbidity.

Through an environmental survey and using quality improvement methodology, gaps in the referral and triage processes were identified, which could lead to delays in specialty care. Two of the main areas highlighted for improvement were: 1) clinical information transfer for safe triage and booking processes and 2) role-clarity between providers.

Through collaboration between the divisions of Endocrinology and Oculoplastics at the University of Toronto, a referral package has been created to facilitate the effective and efficient assessment of patients with Graves’ Orbitopathy by specialty providers:

  1. Referral form
  2. Step-by-step guide on the assessment and referral of patients with Graves’ Orbitopathy
