Description:

This is a primarily medical fellowship dealing with complex inflammatory wounds as well as the precursor conditions that lead to them. As such, time will be divided between wound care clinics at Women’s College Hospital treating primarily inflammatory wounds (vasculitis, pyoderma gangernosum, vasculopathy, multifactorial wounds) as well as complex medical dermatology at Toronto Western Hospital. Clinical time at Women’s College will be split between dermatologists and vascular surgeons; there will also be opportunity to participate in minor surgeries for hidradenitis suppurativa and procedures involving other chronic wounds (malignant and inflammatory). The fellow will be expected to participate in research 2 days per week, supervising medical students in epidemiological research and participating in our ongoing clinical prospective cohort studies and/or clinical trials.

Please explain the research expectations of the proposed fellowship (% of time that isprotected research time):
As mentioned above, 2 days per week will be protected for research and expections will be that the fellow will both co-supervise medical students and assist residents in epidemiological research (systematic reviews and meta analyses) as well as that related to our clinical cohort studies in Pyoderma Gangrenosum, Hidradenitis Suppurativa and general wound healing.

Please explain the teaching expectations of the proposed fellowship (% of time and types of teaching commitments):
Two days per week will be dedicated for research which will include scheduled laboratory meetings, co-ordination with our research assistant, clinical data extraction, analysis and possibilities to engage with translational basic science research if the fellow is interested  (transcriptomics, proteomics). Two days per week will be working with the supervising dermatologist in his specialty inflammatory wound clinic and seeing complex medical patients at risk for wounds in general dermatology clinic. One day per week will be scheduled with a vascular surgeon in the wound care center to diversify clinical perspective.

Describe the scholarly expectations that are to be submitted at the end of fellowship:

  • Learn complex medical management of inflammatory and multifactorial wounds; learn surgical techniques in hidradenitis suppurativa and complex wounds ; senior author one manuscript or letter with assistance of supervisor

The DOM expects you to strike a review committee (of at least 2 people) to review applications, Interview candidates and select the successful applicant.

Please explain the criteria that will be used in the selection process:
We will evaluate candidates based on their merit based on the CanMEDS competencies as well as previous experience in infectious disease, vascular surgery or dermatological clinical practice and research, with evidence of success in publication and project leadership.
