Description:

Aerospace Medicine

The Division of Occupational Medicine is currently offering one funded fellowship position for the 2-year training option starting January 2026.

Expressions of interest for a January 2027 start are also welcomed at this time (with application dates to follow).

FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM: We offer a 1-year Clinical Aerospace (CAS stream), and a 2-year combined Clinical + Masters (Diplomate stream) fellowship.

The 2-year Mark Pathy Fellowships in Aerospace Medicine has been developed to meet the requirements of the RCPSC competency training requirements for an accredited program leading to a DRCPC. At this time the accreditation process is still underway, with a goal to be finalized prior to program completion for a candidate commencing training in Jan 2026. Program accreditation will also enable the Fellow to be eligible to write the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) Aerospace Medicine Board exam.

The program is based in Toronto. Unlike other Fellowships which are typically hospital-based, the home base for the Aerospace Fellowship is Ontario’s provincial air ambulance (Ornge Air Ambulance), enabled by an agreement between the University of Toronto and Ornge.

The fellowship entails significant travel to rotations outside Toronto including the USA and possibly Europe. Transportation and housing costs are included with the fellowship funding. Applicants must be eligible to travel, and willing to be away from Toronto for a significant portion of the training program. The program also entails on-line and virtual components.

The program requires completion of a Master’s degree (MScCH) as one component of training https://www.dlsph.utoronto.ca/program/mscch-occupational-health-care-ohc/

The successful applicant to the program will therefore need to meet additional admission requirements for the School of Graduate Studies which include as a minimum an appropriate bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a recognized university with at least a mid-B average in final year of the degree, or in the last 5.0 full course equivalents completed at a senior level

Access to protected B data will require security screening; the applicant must be eligible for “Reliability Status” security clearance as a minimum

Although not mandatory, eligibility for or confirmed possession of Category 1 or Category 3 aviation medical certificate is an asset, as some rotations entail active flying (as passenger, non-controlling aircrew) and swimming.

Non-disclosure agreements or additional privacy training may be requested on some rotations.

FUNDING: Support has been made available through the generosity of a donor, however sponsored trainees are also welcomed to apply separately.

WHO CAN APPLY: Fellowship positions are available for physicians with certification in any primary specialty (ie must have completed medical school and a residency program)

APPLICATION: If you are interested in joining our Team for this fellowship opportunity, applicants submit the following documents to aerospace.med@utoronto.ca:

  • CV
  • cover letter (maximum 3 pages) explaining your interest in the program, highlighting your demonstrated interest in the discipline of aerospace medicine or a related field, outlining relevant past experiences (if applicable), and describing your future goals
  • 3 reference letters, one from your former residency program director
  • proof of an aviation medical certificate (if you have one)
  • transcripts from all university programs
  • proof of licensure in a regulated health profession

Please check this webpage frequently as dates for application and available fellowship positions may change.
