Chair's Column: Looking ahead to a New Year - A New Normal

Reflecting on the past year, I remain incredibly proud and privileged to be the Chair of this department. You – our faculty and learners - have been through so much! Our health care system is in crisis and COVID continues to surge, but your commitment to delivering the very best in patient care, to teaching and learning, to searching for new ways to diagnose and treat the conditions that plague our society – has been unwavering. YOU should be very proud as well!

The past three years have taken a big toll on all of you, as the preliminary results of the 2022 Faculty Survey underscore, but you continue to push forward. Years from now, you will look back at this difficult time with pride – you were part of this; you helped us get through this.

Despite the tough circumstances, the department has made remarkable strides forward – to shape the new normal for academic medicine. In December’s column, I shared the tremendous efforts made to address the Areas for Improvement (AFIs) in our Core Internal Medicine program. We “got political” and our advocacy is bearing fruit. There is much to tell you! Which is why this will be the focus of City-Wide Medical Grand Rounds on February 15th, 2023. Please join us.

As we face the challenges in medicine in 2023 and beyond, I am grateful to be part of this extraordinary community. Thank you for all you have done and all you continue to do. Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2023!
