The Department of Medicine is excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Shabbir Alibhai as the George, Margaret and Gary Hunt Family Chair in Geriatric Medicine.
The Hunt Family Chair in Geriatric Medicine was established in 2012 with the goal of building capacity and support for research efforts in Geriatric Medicine at the University of Toronto (U of T).
Dr. Shabbir Alibhai is a Professor in the Department of Medicine, the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, and the Institute of Medical Sciences at U of T. He is a staff physician in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics at the University Health Network and Sinai Health System, a senior scientist at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, and a prior Research Scientist of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Canadian Cancer Society.
His research interests are in geriatric oncology, particularly the impact of disease and treatment on quality of life and function of patients with advanced prostate cancer, the value of geriatric assessment in older adults with cancer and randomized trials of supportive care interventions to improve outcomes in older adults with cancer. Since 2015, he is also the medical lead for the geriatric oncology program at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Canada’s largest academic cancer centre, as well as the director of their Geriatric Oncology fellowship program.
Dr. Alibhai’s many contributions to the Division of Geriatric Medicine were recently recognized with the Geriatric Medicine Citizenship Award. As the Hunt Chair, Dr. Alibhai will take on the role of research lead for his division.
