ITRD is a self-approved group learning activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

The initiative and work completed by the leading team and speakers is all voluntary, with no current industry-involvement.

Goals

ITRD’s goal is to create a platform for free international knowledge transfer in medical dermatology and cross border cooperation leading to a community of practice. ITRD brings together international dermatologists to share up-to-date advances in medical dermatology and to create an opportunity to engage directly with global opinion leaders in dermatology. We also hope that this engagement will create international clinical and academic collaborations, and career opportunities for dermatologists to pursue fellowships worldwide.

Success of the Program

The CISEPO International Telehealth Program was founded as the “International Network of Knowledge through Electronic Learning” in 2005. It was pioneered by the Peter A. Silverman eHealth Program and hosted by Baycrest Hospital for Geriatric Care. The eHealth program launched the International Behavioural Neurology Grand Rounds and included CISEPO’s Israeli, Jordanian and Palestinian academic partners, South Africa and the World Health Organization.

It was designed to partner Canadian healthcare professionals and academics with colleagues in Israel, Jordan, and Palestine, with the intent to share expertise on diagnostics and treatment in realtime through video teleconferences. The telehealth innovation enabled cross border healthcare cooperation in the middle east under a Canadian umbrella. The program has expanded globally and includes a broad range of clinical disciplines. The interactive format creates a community of practice which supports research collaboratives, jointly authored publications, and a wide array of opportunities for study and fellowships.

The ITRD program was launched in December of 2019 to an enthusiastic reception from participants. Since then, 9 talks have been held, featuring 11 internationally renowned dermatologists and clinicians from complementary disciplines such as Public Health and Epidemiology.

These interactive Zoom-based Dermatology lectures have attracted audiences of over 400 international clinicians per session, and regularly draw over 2500 synchronous views on Facebook live stream. Registered participants join ITRD from over 20 various countries around the globe, including Australia, Japan, Chile, Taiwan, United States, Canada, Israel, Argentina, Mexico, Costa Rica, Sweden, Ireland, Italy, Japan, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Brazil, Nicaragua, South Africa, Palestine, and England.

Academic Collaborations

The ITRD collaboration was important in the establishment of an additional international platform created due to COVID-19 pandemic, International Dermatologists Fighting Coronavirus Together, which involves more than 670 participants.

These platforms created fruitful academic international collaborations on COVID-19 research in the field of dermatology. Five manuscripts on the topic were accepted for publication in Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD), Journal of Dermatological Science, and Dermatologic Therapy.
