In Memoriam: Dr. Lynn From
Dr. Lynn From graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto in 1963. She then completed medical training at Wellesley Hospital; St. John’s Hospital for Diseases of the Skin in London, England; Sunnybrook Medical Centre; Massachusetts General Hospital at Harvard Medical School; Toronto General Hospital; and Toronto Western Hospital.
Dr. From lectured at the University of Toronto beginning in 1972 and was appointed associate professor in both Medicine and Pathology in 1984. She became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada in dermatology in 1971 and in anatomical pathology in 1972. From 1972-1981, Dr. From was a member of staff at Sunnybrook Medical Centre, working in dermatology and pathology. In 1981, she joined the staff of Women's College Hospital, where she was appointed Chief of Pathology, a position she held until 1992. In 1993, she was appointed head of the Division of Dermatology, and held the post until 2000. Dr. Lynn From also served as a medical staff representative on the Women's College Hospital Board of Directors from 1984-1989 and 1997-1999 and served on the Women's College Hospital Foundation Board of Directors from 1991-1993. Dr. From was also President of the Women's College Hospital Medical Staff Association during the amalgamation of Sunnybrook and Women's College Hospital. She also served as the Chief of Dermatology at Women’s College Hospital. From 2000-2001, Dr. From was appointed President of the Canadian Dermatology Association. In 2006, she was presented the Award of Merit from the Canadian Dermatology Association, in recognition of her excellence in leadership, dermatology education, and public health.
Dr. From kept teaching and seeing patients for many years and remained a mentor and expert consultant in Dermatopathology. She was a fierce advocate for women in medicine and sun safety. Dr. From became a full Professor of Medicine and received numerous awards throughout her career. She continued to publish articles in high impact factor journals until 2015. She combined speaking engagements across the world with her love of travel. She will be remembered for her sharp mind, frankness, great laugh, generosity and kindness.
Given the COVID-19 situation, funerals and gatherings are not happening as usual. A small family grave side service is planned. There will be an obituary in Saturday's papers. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Lynn for her encouragement of so many our careers and her long service to our specialty; and to making the world a better place.
She will be missed by her family, friends, and many medical colleagues from around the world.
