Remembering Dr. Paul Kortan

The Department of Medicine is devastated by the passing of beloved friend and colleague Dr. Paul Kortan. Paul was an incredibly dedicated therapeutic endoscopist and educator who mentored generations of physicians both in Canada and abroad, leaving an indelible impact on his patients, students and fellow physicians.

Paul completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto, went on to study medicine at McMaster University, returned to Toronto for postgraduate training, and proceeded to complete training with specialists in Belgium and Germany. Paul was widely known for his integrity, clinical excellence, and skilled teaching working his way to the pinnacle of his profession where he was universally respected by his fellow physicians, cherished by his students, and loved by his patients.

We wish to extend our sincerest condolences to Paul’s wife Sylvia, their children, grandchildren and all those who loved and cared for him. His loss is felt deeply by his friends and colleagues here in the Department and Medicine. More information about Paul and his memorialization can be found here: https://www.paulkortanmemorial.com/. The St. Michael’s Foundation has also set up the Dr. Paul Kortan Therapeutic Endoscopy Fund for those who are able to donate.
