Response to the 2018 Department of Medicine External Review

About Us
Department of Medicine logo

In 2018, the Department of Medicine embarked on a self-study as part of a five-year cyclical external review commissioned by the Faculty of Medicine’s Dean’s Office. The external review was an opportunity for the department to take stock of where we are, where we’d like to be and to garner input on how to get there.

On behalf of the entire Department of Medicine and Faculty of Medicine, I would like to thank the external reviewers, Professors Katrina Armstrong from Harvard Medical School and Graydon Meneilly from the University of British Columbia. I am very grateful to the reviewers for their praise of the Department's progress. Their recommendations are very helpful and will help guide the future strategic directions of the Department of Medicine. While in most cases, they reinforce our current thinking and the value of initiatives we have already launched, the recommendations have also provoked ‘new thinking’ about the opportunities and challenges we face.

Additionally, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the preparation of the self-study report and the many faculty, trainees and staff who met with the external reviewers.

I am very pleased to share three documents that have come out of the external review process:

I invite you to read these documents for additional insights on the external review process.

Sincerely,

Dr. Gillian Hawker
Sir John and Lady Eaton Professor and Chair of Medicine
