Description:

This is an opportunity to join the longest running Hospitalist Medicine fellowship program in Canada. The curriculum has been specifically designed to provide trainees with the opportunity to expand their expertise in hospital-based medical care, and particularly focuses on the care of the acutely ill medical patient and on hospital systems of care. It is anticipated that by the end of the program year that candidates will be capable of delivering comprehensive medical care to virtually all hospitalized patients including managing critically ill patients and providing consultation services to the Emergency Department and to surgical services.

In addition to assisting physicians to improve their clinical knowledge and skills through exposure to a multitude of medical conditions, the program particularly emphasizes training in medical education, quality improvement methodologies, clinical ethics, and hospital systems and their relationship to medical practice. Our curriculum is based on the Society of Hospital Medicine core competencies.

Fellows work as core members of a variety of clinical teams providing comprehensive hospital-based care to medical patients, including emergency evaluation and management, critical care, general medical care, and transitional care; a committed group of University of Toronto faculty members supervise and manage the program and are closely involved in the education of Fellows.

The clinical curriculum runs on a 13-block academic year made up of the following rotations:

  • 8 Blocks Core Hospitalist Rotations (2 weeks of in-patient hospitalist ward, 1 week of in-patient consultation, 1 week of overnight call [generally 2-3 nights])
  • 1 Block Complex Malignant Hematology Rotation (primarily on hospitalist team caring for malignant hematology inpatients)
  • 1 Block Perioperative Medicine Rotation at the Holland Centre
  • 1 Block Intensive Care Rotation
  • 2 Blocks Elective Rotations
