Announcement: Royal College Examination Timing - Internal Medicine

Education
Learning

Internal Medicine (IM) PGY-1s, who started their training in July 2016 will now complete both the oral and written examinations at the end of the third year of residency training (2019) rather than the traditional fourth year (2020).

It is important to note that this move means the final examination will no longer be a certification event. The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons is currently working through defining a new process for completing the Final In-Training Evaluation Report (FITER), which will be brought to Royal College Credentials Committee this November for their review. Once approved by the Royal College, the new process will be communicated to all medical school partners and impacted IM residents.

As a result of this decision, in 2019, the Royal College is planning to accommodate double the number of IM exam candidates in the same year:

  • IM residents who started training in 2015, and who will complete their exam in the traditional fourth year of their residency training (2019), and
  • IM residents who started training in 2016, and who will complete their exam in their third year of their residency training (2019).

More information regarding this change will be available on the Royal College website in the near future.
