Healthcare startup BlueDot, founded by the Department of Medicine's Dr. Kamran Khan, won in the Health and Wellness category at the seventh annual Canadian Innovation Awards. Awarded at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto on February 22, 2018, BlueDot was among dozens of innovative Canadian companies and entrepreneurs recognized for their work leading Canada’s booming technology sector.
BlueDot studies the spread of infectious diseases around the world through the lens of big data. It uses web and mobile technologies to facilitate smart and timely decisions by individuals and health organizations. Dr. Khan is an infectious disease physician based at St. Michael’s Hospital and Associate Professor with the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine. Motivated by the 2003 SARS outbreak in Toronto, Dr. Khan has dedicated his career to finding solutions to prepare for and respond to future infectious disease threats.
