Department of Medicine Response to University of Toronto Antisemitism Working Group Report

The University of Toronto Antisemitism Working Group (ASWG) has released their report after months of extensive consultations and careful examinations. Senior university leadership has accepted all eight recommendations proposed by ASWG. The Department of Medicine completely supports the University's response to the ASWG report and is fully committed to supporting our Jewish learners, staff and faculty. There is no place for antisemitism in the Department of Medicine.

The Department of Medicine (DOM) is one of the largest and most diverse departments in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. Our commitment to academic freedom and equity, diversity, and inclusion underlies everything we do. We encourage you to review the report and take an opportunity to reflect on your initial reactions.

However, we do need to go beyond enhancing our knowledge and to undertake actions to address rising antisemitism in our academic environments and healthcare settings. At an individual level, let's continue to listen compassionately and to act as allies to help support our Jewish learners, staff and faculty. The Office of Learner Experience is an excellent resource to support Jewish learners facing acts of micro-aggression and mistreatment rooted in antisemitism.

At a department level, there are educational resources available on the DOM website to further enhance our understanding on antisemitism. The Temerty Faculty of Medicine has appointed a senior advisor on antisemitism: Dr. Ayelet Kuper (a member of the Department of Medicine) to provide further guidance and support to our faculty members and learners. We encourage everyone in the department to continue their journey from allyship to advocacy to address antisemitism. This journey can take many forms - from modifying policies and procedures, to building scholarship, providing mentorship, and being there for our peers when needed. We need to work together to create a safe and inclusive culture where we all belong. Feel free to reach out any time to share your concerns, insights, and reflections when needed.
