Purpose
To recognize excellence in teaching, educational leadership and educational administration at the undergraduate level of members of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Toronto.
Criteria
Candidates may be nominated by faculty or students.
A candidate may be nominated based on one or more of the following criteria:
- Has received high average Teaching Effectiveness (TE) scores on medical student evaluations provided for pre-clerkship and clerkship teaching.
- Has demonstrated consistent excellence in undergraduate teaching.
- Has provided exemplary service to the division as an educational leader and administrator at the undergraduate level.
All winners should be exemplary role models for medical students, demonstrating the CANMEDs roles with distinction. Basic scientists in the division should demonstrate the role of translational research and the importance of basic science to the practice of medicine.
Selection Process
The selection committee will be made up of the division director, senior members of the executive of the division, and the senior resident trainee member of the Postgraduate Training Committee.
In the case of nominations based on category 1) The selection committee will be provided with a list of the faculty obtaining the top three average TE scores from the previous year. These scores must be derived from at least four (4) individual student evaluations and must be derived from all available scores. The division director will survey all TE scores for nomination and consideration for the award. In addition to the average TE score, individual components of the evaluation and comments made by the students that describe the teacher as an excellent role model will be considered.
In order for nominations to be considered, the nominators and/or nominees must provide supporting documentation for the candidate in the form of a curriculum vitae and/or teaching dossier. The nominees will be notified in advance to submit these supporting documents.
Any individual having already received the award within the previous five years will not be eligible.

- Has received high average TE scores on medical student evaluations provided for pre-clerkship and clerkship teaching.
- Has demonstrated consistent excellence in undergraduate teaching.
- Has provided exemplary service to the division as an educational leader and administrator at the undergraduate level.
This award is meant to recognize teachers in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism who are outstanding based on their teaching effectiveness as well as their role modeling of key competencies of the specialist physician as outlined in the CANMEDS roles. Basic scientists in the division should demonstrate the role of translational research and the importance of basic science to the practice of medicine.
By nominating this teacher, it is understood that you feel that this teacher deserves a teaching award. This award will be given to one member of the University of Toronto Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism (cross-appointed members are eligible). Award winners will be ineligible for renomination for a period of five years.
The Selection Committee will be comprised of the division director, senior members of the executive of the division and the senior level endocrine trainee of the Postgraduate Training Committee.
The award will be announced at the Annual Department of Medicine Dinner .

Terms of Reference
Purpose
To recognize excellence in teaching, educational leadership, program development and/or educational administration, and/or scholarship related to continuing professional development in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Toronto.
Award Criteria
A candidate may be nominated based on demonstrated commitment to excellence in continuing professional development education in one or more of the following areas:
- Excellence in Teaching at the Continuing Professional Development Level
- Excellence in Program Coordination/Administration of Continuing Professional Development
- Excellence in Scholarly activities in Continuing Professional Development
All winners will have demonstrated excellence and enthusiasm for sharing knowledge and skills with other health professional learners/colleagues (for example through creativity, innovation, style, enthusiasm, commitment, effectiveness and/or originality) and demonstrated effective use of appropriate teaching resources and instructional methodologies where applicable. Winners must be role models in professionalism and scholarship for learners and colleagues.
Award Eligibility
Any faculty member with an appointment to the University of Toronto Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism is eligible for the award. Any individual having already received the award within the previous five years will not be eligible.
Nomination Procedure
Candidates may be nominated by faculty, administrative staff or participants in the CPD programs which have been organized by the candidate.
The nomination package should consist of at least one letter from the nominator outlining the reason that the nominee is deserving of the award and documentation from the candidate in the form of a curriculum vitae and summary of impact of teaching, program coordination/administration and or scholarship in the CPD. Any supporting documents such as links to programs, or program outlines, syllabus, scholarly work, should be submitted where applicable.
Selection Process
The selection committee will be made up of the division director, and the executive of the division. The award will be announced annually and awardee receive a recognition plaque.

Terms of Reference of the Award
This award is meant to recognize teachers in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism who are outstanding based on their teaching effectiveness and role modeling of all the competencies of the specialist physician as outlined in the CANMEDS document.
Only trainees will be allowed to nominate candidates.Teachers will be notified of their nomination and/or receipt of the award at the end of the academic year.
Residents rotating through endocrinology and postgraduate trainees in endocrinology will be allowed to nominate candidates. Rotating residents will be allowed to nominate one teacher and endocrine trainees up to a maximum of two teachers whom they feel are deserving of this award over the course of the academic year. Endocrine trainees will be asked to consider nominations in April.
The George L. A. From Award Committee will be external to the Postgraduate Training Committee. The composition of this committee will include: a senior member of the Department of Medicine outside of endocrinology, the endocrinology chief resident, and the departmental divisional director.
The recipient of the award will not be eligible to receive the award for another three years.
The decision-making process should be based on several criteria, including:
1. The average of the scores for each of the itemized characteristics.
2. The average of the global ratings for each candidate.
3. The number of nominations and received by the individual.
4. The comments made by trainees (rated out of four). These are often the most helpful in distinguishing between candidates.
Nomination Process
Residents rotating through endocrinology for 12 months ending in May of the current academic year are eligible to nominate a teacher who they feel are deserving of this award.
Endocrinology subspecialty residents are eligible to nominate up to a maximum of two teachers whom they feel are deserving of this award over the course of the academic year.
This award is meant to recognize teachers in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism who are outstanding based on their teaching effectiveness and their role modeling of all of the key competencies of the specialist physician as outlined in the CANMEDS roles.
By nominating this teacher, it is understood that you feel that this teacher deserves a teaching award. As this award will be given to only one of the endocrinologists in the city, we ask you to rate your nominee using the nomination form in the following categories according to the following scale:
- Displays this quality in a good manner.
- Displays this quality in a very good manner (one of the best teachers I have had this year).
- Displays this quality in an excellent manner (the best teacher I have had this year).
- Displays this quality in an outstanding manner (the best teacher I have ever had).

Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism Student Achievement Award
The Division Endocrinology and Metabolism Achievement Award recognizes a graduating medical student at the University of Toronto “who has shown exceptional ability and interest in endocrinology”.
This award is donated in honour of our division’s outstanding former teachers and educators.
The Award is designed to “encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in endocrinology and related fields of medicine, education, research and quality and innovation”.
The Award provides the recipient (s) with a share of $2500 annually (max 2 students – $1250 each).
This award will be presented at the June graduation ceremony to the student chosen by the Selection Committee.
Nomination Criteria & Procedure
- A record of interest in Endocrine research or other academic activities (e.g. summer research, graduate studies, research electives, publications in endocrine research, etc.). Submit an updated curriculum vitae.
- A record of excellence in academic courses and programs, particularly those in which Endocrinology is a focus
- At least one letter of nomination from a research and/or clinical supervisor that includes the student number as well as details of the reasons for nomination using the following categories.
- Evidence of student excellence in academic courses and programs (particularly those in which Endocrinology is a focus)
- Evidence of student interest in Endocrine academic activities
- Future plans of the student
- Other
